서비스 기획자들의 설 자리는...
프로그래밍 언어나 디자인 툴 그리고 서비스 개발을 위한 저작툴이 갈수록 지능화되고 통합화되고 있습니다. 그 와중에 프로토타입을 이용한 개발이나 애자일 방법론 등이 주목을 받고 있습니다.

그렇다보니 갈수록 기획자의 설 자리가 작아지고 있네요. 최근 미국이나 일본, 중국의 PM(Product Manager)들과 얘기를 나눌 시간들이 있어서 그들의 상황을 들여다보면... 그들의 PM은 Project보다는 Product를 책임지고 상품(서비스)이 처음 설계되고 만들어져서 마케팅되어 BM(Business Model)을 만들기까지의 전 과정을 꿰뚫고 있었습니다. 한 마디로 PM은 완벽한 멀티플레이어였던 것이죠.

전략, 기획, 설계, 개발, 마케팅, 영업, 관리 전반에 대한 지식을 갖추고 이를 통제할 수 있는 역량을 갖추고 있었습니다. 재미있는 것은 한국에서 기획자라 불리는 역할이 PM과 개발자 그리고 디자이너의 활발한 커뮤니케이션 속에서 분배되어 있다는 것입니다.

한국의 경우도 수 백 아니 수 천 장의 스토리보드를 그려 나가는 기획자의 설자리가 점차 사라질 것으로 예상됩니다. 해외의 사례가 저렇기 때문에 그럴 것 같다라는 것이 아니라... 개발툴이 워낙 Visual하고 직관적으로 진화되고, 데이터베이스를 모델링하고 시스템을 디자인하는 툴들이 지능화되면서 화면을 그릴 필요성이 사라지기 때문입니다.

굳이 기능명세서와 스토리보드를 만들어 이 문서를 가지고 커뮤니케이션하기 보다는 떠오른 아이디어와 생각을 프로토타입으로 가볍게 만들어보면서 문제점을 찾아나가고 개선시키면서 발전시키는 것이 훨씬 서비스를 훌륭하게 만들 수 있습니다. 게다가, 개발툴이 통합화되면서 기획자의 중계없이도 개발자와 디자이너가 협업하기 쉬워지는 것도 기획자의 설 자리를 좁게 만들고 있죠.

그렇다면, 기획자는 자신의 자리를 어떻게 찾아가야 할까요?

1. 스토리보드를 그리기에 앞서, 회사의 비전과 시장의 트렌드를 분석해서 서비스의 전략을 수립할 수 있어야 합니다.
  - 개발자나 디자이너가 하지 못하는 영역인 서비스, 상품, 사업의 중장기 전략을 수립할 수 있어야겠죠.
  - 내가 만들려하는 서비스가 회사와 시장에 주는 기대 효과와 비전이 무엇인지 정의할 수 있어야겠죠.
  - 이 서비스를 통해 어떤 가치를 실현하고, 어떠한 목표를 달성할 수 있는지 설정할 수 있어야겠죠.

2. 이 서비스를 구현하는데 최적의 시스템을 설계할 수 있어야 합니다.
  - 하드웨어나 네트워크, 시스템의 기술적 관점이 아닌 Data와 Process의 관점에서 서비스를 분석할 수 있어야겠죠.
  - Data Structure Diagram, Data Flow Diagram, Action Diagram을 그릴 수 있어야겠죠.

3. 마케팅, 경영기획, 비즈니스 모델링을 할 수 있어야 합니다.
  - 산출물의 마케팅을 위한 홍보, 커뮤니케이션 전략을 수립할 수 있어야겠죠.
  - 전체 프로젝트 진행에 들어가는 리소스(시간, 인력, 비용)에 대한 관리와 통제를 할 수 있어야겠죠.
  - 산출물을 통해 얻을 수 있는 BM을 설계할 수 있어야 합니다.

지금 스토리보드를 그리는 기획자분들이라면, 위의 3가지에 대해서 준비를 하시기 바랍니다.
그러면 향후 3년 후에도 자신의 설자리를 명확히 찾을 수 있을 것입니다.

이러닝 분야에서도 교수설계자의 역할이 기획자와 유사하거든요.
이러닝 콘텐츠라는 특성상 아직은 개발자와 디자이너만 가지고는 정상적인 산출물을 내기 어렵기 때문에 자리 걱정은 안해되 되겠지만, 미래를 준비한다면 새겨들어야할 내용인 것 같 습니다.

요즘은 너무도 많은 분야때문에 정확한 역할을 정의하기기 좀 힘드네요..

제가 일하는 쪽에서는 서비스기획의 분들이 UI/UX를 관한 것을 전담하시는데
이것은 서비스기획의 영역이 아닌가요?
디자이너가 하는것도 아닐테고..

한국 기획자들을 위해 좋은 글 쓰셨네요. 오래전부터 한국 인터넷업계에서 기획자라는 역할이 재정의되어야 할 필요성이 있다고 생각해왔습니다.

To 緣/affinity : 사실 요즘은 기획자뿐만 아니라 누구에게나 멀티태스킹을 요구하죠. ^^ 우리가 사용하는 컴퓨터만 해도 멀티태스킹을 보다 빠르게 하기 위해 꾸준히 발전되고 있잖아요.^^

To 5throck : 공감해주시니 감사드립니다.

To 엉뚱이 : 이러닝 콘텐츠의 기획도 넓은 범주에서 보면 교육 프로그램이라는 상품 하나를 만드는 과정이니 해당 상품의 비즈니스적인 가치를 측정하고 이를 어떻게 효과적으로 마케팅해서 ROI를 높이느냐를 따져봐야겠죠. 말씀대로 웹 기획자와 유사하네요.

To 제우스 : 회사 규모나 서비스 특성에 따라 조금씩 다른 듯 합니다. 제 생각은 궁극적으로는 넓은 범주에서 기획자는 HCI를 고려해야 하고, 실제 이를 포장해서 구현해내는 UI에 대한 것은 디자이너의 몫(or 별도의 UX 관련 팀)이 아닌가 싶어요.

갈수록 서비스 기획자들의 미래 커리어맵을 그리는 것이 힘들어짐을 느낍니다.

공감되는 글을 보고나니 앞으로 뭐해야할까 다시한번 그려보게 되네요.

회사의 마케팅부서의 경영진이나 관리자급이 해야하는 일과 일맥상통한다는 느낌이 듭니다. 회사 영업이익을 위한 창의적이고 혁신적인 아이디어로 마켓플랜을 짜서 이를 실천하는 일이 되겠습니다.
